Living identity systems: why one logo is no longer enough.

A logo used to be one fixed picture, printed on a letterhead and a sign. Today your brand shows up in a browser tab, a phone icon, a chat window, a video intro and a social avatar. One picture can't do all of that well. That's why more businesses are moving to a living identity system.

What is a living identity system?

A living identity system is a family of marks that work together, each with its own job, plus a short set of rules that keep them recognizable as one brand. Instead of squeezing a single logo into every space, you give each space the right version.

Think of it like a wardrobe. You don't wear one outfit to every occasion. You have pieces that suit each setting, and people still know it's you.

Five marks, five jobs

We built this system for our own brand, so you can see it working. These are live, not screenshots. Move your cursor over the wordmark.

Mark 1 · Main logo

The Slash

The full name with a glowing gradient blade. It goes in headers, proposals, invoices and anywhere the whole name fits.

Mark 2 · Icon

The Badge

A compact monogram for favicons, social avatars, app icons and stickers, where the full name would be too small to read.

Mark 3 · Motion mark

The Living Wordmark

Letters that react to the viewer. It's the hero moment on a website or the opening of a video, and no two visits look exactly alike.

Mark 4 · AI signature

The Spark

A small sign that says "this part is powered by AI". It sits on chat assistants, smart tools and anything automated, so people know what they're using.

Mark 5 · Campaign mark

The Bracket

The loud, playful voice of the brand. It's made for campaigns, event signage, merch and social posts where you want energy more than polish.

The rules that make it work

The marks are only half of the system. The other half is a short rulebook, so anyone on your team (or an AI tool) can use them without guessing:

  • Which mark where. A simple chart: website header, social avatar, invoice, video intro, merch.
  • Colour and contrast. Approved palettes, dark and light versions, and what to do on photos.
  • Motion rules. How fast, how long, and when to keep things still.
  • Clear space and minimum sizes. So the logo never gets cramped or illegible.
  • Voice. How the brand sounds, so new content feels like you.

Why this matters now

  • Screens are small. A long logo turns into a smudge at 32 pixels. A dedicated icon stays sharp.
  • Brands move. Websites, reels and chat windows all use motion. A logo built to move looks intentional, not bolted on.
  • AI is part of the picture. If you use AI assistants or content tools, a brand voice guide and clear rules keep their output on brand. A dedicated AI mark tells customers when they're talking to a tool.
  • Consistency saves money. When everyone knows which version to use, you stop paying to fix mismatched graphics.

How we build one

  1. Discover. We learn who you are, who you serve and where your brand will appear.
  2. Explore. We use AI to look at many directions quickly, then narrow to the strongest few.
  3. Craft. A designer refines the winning direction by hand into a family of marks.
  4. Animate. We add motion where it helps and keep static versions for everywhere else.
  5. Activate. You get the rulebook, files for every use, and templates so the system is easy to apply.

Is it right for your business?

If your brand lives mostly on a website, social media or in video, or you're adding AI tools to how you work, a living identity system is worth considering. It also suits businesses that have outgrown a logo that was made for a single sign or business card. A small business doesn't need a huge system: even a main logo, an icon and one motion mark can make a big difference.

Frequently asked questions

How many logos are in a living identity system?

Most systems have four or five core marks, such as a main logo, an icon, a motion mark, an AI signature and a campaign mark, plus clear rules for when to use each one. The exact set depends on your business.

Do I still get a normal, static logo?

Yes. Every mark has static versions for print, signage, embroidery, packaging and anywhere motion isn't possible. The animation is an extra, not a replacement.

Will animated logos slow my website down?

No. We build them with lightweight code (SVG and CSS), so they add only a few kilobytes and run smoothly on phones.

Is AI used to design the logos?

AI helps us explore more directions faster. Every final mark is designed and refined by a person, and you own the finished logos outright.

How long does a brand identity system take?

It depends on scope. We'll give you a clear schedule in your quote, and you'll see progress at every stage.
